on the road again...

i rise in the dark, have a bite, shower, dress, and go.

it's a familiar course -- onto the freeway, straight shot into L.A. county, through the Valley to the dreaded interchange with the hollywood freeway, through the snarled cahuenga pass into hollywood. i do it ten times a week (okay, five in reverse), for better or worse -- I get to see five sunrises, but 2,000 miles a month takes its toll, in more ways than just the two hundred bucks in gas (give or take).

the worst part of the travel is the last twentieth, crawling in heavy traffic... it's almost worth it to drive an hour earlier, to miss that mess. the rest isn't something I mind that much -- i listen to NPR, or to music, or to nothing at all. i take pics, and in the afternoon i call friends and family to catch up (better not gimme your number, I just might call you too!).

there was a time, back when we had first moved to nevada, when I was still working on shows at warner brothers... compared to that, this routine is nothing. in those days I got up monday morning in time to leave home at 2am, drove four hours to be at work by six, drove back and forth to ventura all week, only to drive the 300 miles back on friday night.

ah well, we do what we must do, right? what absurd thing do you do to make your life work?
