on safari
Each night, at just around the same time for the last few evenings, as the sun neared the horizon, I've taken camera in hand to hunt for photos... also to aimlessly wander the local environs, to see what life presents. Typically we call this activity "going on patrol," but with the camera it becomes "safari." Don't ask me why, that's just the way it is.

Found a new beach on this evening -- it's called Surfer's Knoll (despite the complete absence of surfers on this evening), and it's very pretty -- although for us it was kind of spoiled on this evening by the discovery of a dead pelican and much worse, a dead dolphin. I photographed both, but they're gloomy pics and I'm not gonna share them. On the way out we found a tiny, intact skull lying in the sand... perhaps this pretty stretch of coast would more aptly be called "death beach," despite the scenery.

Anyway, the dog went mad on this beach, streaking around in a full-tilt sprint just for the sheer joy of it. The kids all opted to stay home, and so missed this jaunt, this beach and this sunset altogether. Always a mistake, I think, to eschew the wild card of going on patrol for the predictable and dubious comforts of the electronic homefront.

I knew I shouldn't have gotten them cable TV.
